Speculation grows that Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter could be North Korea’s next leader

Growing public appearances by Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter are fueling renewed speculation that she could one day lead North Korea.

The girl, believed to be named Kim Ju Ae and thought to be in her early teens, has been seen increasingly at high-profile military and political events alongside her father. Her visibility has prompted analysts to question whether she is being positioned as the next leader of the country’s ruling Kim dynasty.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service recently told lawmakers it believes North Korea’s leader has entered a stage of formally preparing her as a potential successor. Officials say she has not only attended significant events but may also have expressed opinions on policy matters, suggesting a more active role.

Still, much remains uncertain. North Korea is one of the world’s most secretive nations, and little reliable information emerges about the Kim family or internal leadership decisions. The country’s extreme isolation, intensified during the pandemic, has made verification even more difficult.

Kim Ju Ae first appeared publicly in 2022 during a missile launch inspection. Since then, she has attended military parades, banquets and diplomatic events, becoming the only one of Kim’s children regularly seen in public. State media often refers to her using affectionate titles such as “beloved daughter,” which observers view as symbolically important.

Not all experts agree that succession is certain. Some believe her appearances may serve political messaging purposes rather than signal a clear leadership transition. Others note that the Kim family historically keeps succession plans tightly guarded, often revealing little until leadership change becomes imminent.

With Kim Jong Un believed to be in his 40s, any transition could still be years away. For now, analysts are watching closely for symbolic clues — including whether she attends upcoming major political gatherings and how she is treated in official ceremonies.
