Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall dies at 95 after legendary six-decade film career

Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor whose commanding screen presence defined some of cinema’s most memorable performances, has died at the age of 95.

According to a statement released on behalf of his wife, Luciana, Duvall died peacefully at his home in Middleburg, Virginia.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Duvall built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected and versatile performers. He earned widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Tom Hagen, the loyal consigliere to the Corleone family, in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. His role helped cement the film’s legacy and launched him into the top tier of American actors.

Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Tender Mercies in 1983, portraying a troubled country singer. He also delivered unforgettable performances as Lt. Col. Kilgore in Apocalypse Now, Marine pilot Bull Meechum in The Great Santini, and in the beloved television miniseries Lonesome Dove.

Born in San Diego, Duvall served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before pursuing acting in New York, where he studied under renowned teacher Sanford Meisner. Early in his career, he appeared in To Kill a Mockingbird as Boo Radley, a small but pivotal role that helped launch his film career.

Duvall continued working well into his later years, earning an Oscar nomination at age 84 for The Judge. In addition to acting, he also directed and wrote films, including The Apostle.

His family says no formal service will be held. Instead, they encourage people to honor his memory by watching a great film, sharing stories with loved ones, or enjoying the beauty of the countryside.
