President’s Day Storm Brings Rain to Coachella Valley as Fair Continues

It’s a wet President’s Day across Southern California as the first of three winter storm systems moves into the region.

Forecasters say at least half an inch of rain is expected through Tuesday, with another round possible Wednesday. The system is bringing steady rainfall to the valleys and heavy snow to the mountains — visible from the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway cam.

The Riverside County Fire Department is urging residents to prepare for potential flooded roads, downed power lines, and fast-moving water.

The storm is already impacting some events across the Coachella Valley, but it hasn’t dampened spirits at the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival in Indio. Fairgoers bundled up in jackets and brought umbrellas, continuing to enjoy rides, food, and indoor attractions despite wind and earlier rain showers.

Fair officials say they are accustomed to operating in various weather conditions and have contingency plans, including indoor activities if needed. However, some vendors — particularly those offering water-based services like face painting — say rainy weather can slow business.

Meanwhile, cities are encouraging residents to take precautions. Cathedral City shared storm preparation tips on social media, advising residents to charge devices, prepare emergency kits, secure their homes, and avoid flooded areas.

Officials say conditions will continue to be monitored throughout the week as additional storm systems approach.
