Winter Olympics
Brazilian skier Bruna Moura overcomes illness, devastating crash, and 16-year journey to become Olympian
For Brazilian cross-country skier Bruna Moura, reaching the Olympics was never just about competition — it was about survival, resilience, and refusing to give up.
Her journey began with a promise to prove doubters wrong. As a child in Brazil, Moura was publicly criticized by a teacher who told her she would never succeed. That moment fueled a lifelong determination to reach the top of whatever she pursued — and by age 15, she set her sights on becoming an Olympian.
Her first path to the Games was mountain biking, but a serious heart defect requiring surgery forced her to step away from the sport. While raising funds for treatment, she discovered cross-country skiing — a new opportunity that would reshape her athletic future.
She qualified for the 2022 Winter Olympics, only to test positive for Covid-19 just days before traveling. Then, while heading to the airport after recovering, she survived a devastating head-on crash in northern Italy that killed the driver and left her with multiple fractures, lung damage, and a severe concussion.
Doctors weren’t sure how fully she would recover. But within months, she was training again. Within years, she returned to Olympic competition.
At age 31, Moura finally stood on the Olympic start line in Italy — just miles from where the crash nearly ended her life. Though she finished far from the podium, simply competing fulfilled a dream she had chased for 16 years.
She still lives with pain from her injuries and carries memories of loved ones she lost along the way. But for Moura, becoming an Olympian — and inspiring others with her story — is the greatest victory of all.
