Lifelong Olympic fan attends eighth Winter Games, shares unforgettable moments from around the world
For Mark Chestnut, the Olympics are about far more than medals and competition — they are about connection, culture, and unforgettable moments shared with people from around the world.
His Olympic journey began in 1992 in France. That first trip sparked a passion that would last more than three decades. Since then, he has attended eight Winter Olympic Games, traveling across continents to experience the global celebration of sport.
While attending events is exciting, he says the real highlight is meeting people from different countries and learning about their cultures. For him, the Games are a place where the world comes together in one shared experience.
Over the years, Chestnut has collected memories that many sports fans only dream about. At one Olympics, he found himself riding public transportation alongside members of the Canadian men’s hockey team — including Sidney Crosby — an unexpected moment that captured the unique accessibility and excitement of the Games.
One of his most meaningful experiences came when he met Diane de Coubertin, the great-great-grandniece of Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. Being able to speak with a member of the family that helped shape Olympic history became one of his most treasured memories.
At the recent Winter Games in Milan, he also witnessed unforgettable moments on the ice. After a Norwegian skater set an Olympic record and won gold, the athlete skated past with the national flag draped across his back — a powerful display of pride and emotion that captured the spirit of the Games.
Now, Chestnut is sharing the experience with his daughter Madison, continuing a family tradition built on travel, discovery, and a lifelong love of the Olympics.
For him, the magic of the Games is not just in watching history happen — it is in being there to feel it.
