St. Louis Encephalitis Virus Detected in North Shore Mosquito Sample

The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District says a mosquito sample collected near Avenue 72 and Garfield Street in North Shore has tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis virus.

Officials say recent rain and rising temperatures can quickly increase mosquito populations, raising the risk of virus activity. No human cases have been reported at this time.

St. Louis Encephalitis spreads through mosquito bites after the insects feed on infected birds. While most people experience no symptoms, some may develop fever, headaches or body aches.

Residents are encouraged to dump standing water weekly, properly maintain pools and drains, and use EPA-registered insect repellent to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
