St. Theresa Students Celebrate Modernism Week with Palm Springs-Inspired Showcase
To celebrate Palm Springs Modernism Week, St. Theresa Catholic School in Palm Springs held its own special event, highlighting student creativity and the city’s iconic architectural roots.
As part of a long-running sixth-grade project, students designed and built detailed housing models that embody the essence of Palm Springs modernism. The hands-on assignment coincides each year with Modernism Week, giving students the opportunity to study mid-century architecture up close through field trips, classroom lessons, and presentations from local experts and family members connected to the movement.
This year’s theme focused on the influence of architect Donald Wexler, whose designs can be found throughout Palm Springs. Students drew inspiration from his work, incorporating clean lines, functional design, and desert-modern elements into their own models.
For many students, the project sparked a deeper interest in architecture. Parents say they’ve seen that passion growing for years. One parent shared that their child has always been fascinated by building and design, making the project a natural fit.
The annual showcase has been a tradition at St. Theresa’s for 14 years, and teachers say they’ve watched countless students develop confidence and creativity through the assignment — with some even going on to pursue careers in architecture.
Faculty members say what stands out most is how each model reflects the individual personality of the student behind it. The project not only teaches design principles but also encourages independent thinking and artistic expression.
If you missed the initial showcase, another viewing will take place Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. in Palm Springs.
