Downtown Palm Springs Parking Debate Grows Over Proposed Fire Station
A growing controversy is unfolding in downtown Palm Springs, where the city plans to reduce the size of a popular parking lot on North Palm Canyon Drive to make room for a new fire station.
Flyers now line storefronts along the corridor urging residents to sign a petition to save the lot, which serves roughly 35 businesses. Some nearby property owners say they were not properly notified and feel left out of the planning process.
Palm Springs Fire Department Chief Paul Alvarado shared conceptual designs for the proposed station ahead of Monday’s open house at Fire Station One. The current station, a historic building designed by Albert Frey, has served the community for more than 70 years.
Alvarado says the facility no longer meets the operational needs of a growing city, citing taller buildings and increased demand for emergency services. He emphasized that the plans are still conceptual and that community feedback could influence parking accommodations and design adjustments.
The open house will take place Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Fire Station One, located at 277 North Indian Canyon Drive. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their input with fire department officials.
