Flower donations bring joy and comfort to cancer patients at Des Moines treatment center

A heartfelt act of kindness is bringing color, comfort, and encouragement to cancer patients in Des Moines, Iowa.

At the John Stoddard Cancer Center, patients are receiving surprise bouquets of fresh flowers thanks to Catherine Schut, owner of Hive and Petal, a beekeeping flower farm in Prairie City. Schut regularly delivers arrangements to brighten the day of those undergoing treatment, and during one recent visit she dropped off 40 bouquets.

Schut says she was inspired to give back after learning about the many supportive programs offered at the center through a friend receiving care there. When the opportunity arose to donate something meaningful, she chose flowers — a simple gesture meant to bring warmth and positivity.

For patients like Meddy Paulus, the unexpected gift has made a real difference. Paulus was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2025 following a routine mammogram, shortly after returning home from competing in an elite weightlifting competition.

She says the cancer journey has been difficult, but moments of kindness help shift the emotional weight of treatment. Receiving flowers, she explained, lifts spirits and reminds patients they are supported.

Paulus now advocates for changing the narrative around cancer, focusing on resilience, encouragement, and hope. She says thoughtful gestures like these bouquets offer a powerful emotional boost during challenging times.

Through regular deliveries, Schut hopes the flowers serve as small but meaningful reminders that even in the darkest moments, beauty and compassion can still bloom.
