Modernism Week Hosts World Monuments Fund Prize Outside New York for First Time

For the first time in its history, the prestigious World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize was presented outside New York City, with the 2026 ceremony taking place during Modernism Week in Palm Springs. The award recognizes architects and preservationists whose work demonstrates innovative and repeatable methods for conserving modernist architecture around the world.

This year’s recipient, Architectus, was honored for leading a decade-long, $60 million restoration of a significant modernist building. The project included repairs to the structure’s concrete framework, the preservation of millions of mosaic tiles, and the careful restoration of hundreds of original furnishings designed by Arturo Mezzedimi.

Organizers say Palm Springs was a natural fit to host the ceremony, given its international reputation for midcentury modern design and strong community support for architectural preservation. The prize aligns closely with the city’s ongoing efforts to celebrate and protect its historic structures.

The internationally recognized ceremony began at 4 p.m. at the Palm Springs Art Museum Annenberg Theater, drawing preservation advocates, architects, and design enthusiasts from around the world. Officials say bringing the award to Palm Springs highlights the city’s growing influence in the global modernism movement.
