Strong Words storytelling showcase coming to Rancho Mirage Library with free live performance

A night dedicated to the power of storytelling is coming to Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory this week.

Strong Words, the art of storytelling, will take the stage Thursday, February 19 at 7 p.m., bringing live personal stories, performance and language together in a theatrical experience for audiences. The event is free and open to the public.

Creator Larry Dean Harris describes storytelling as sharing meaningful life experiences with an audience — offering insight, humor and perspective in a carefully crafted performance. He says the key to great storytelling is clarity and brevity, along with emotional connection and often a surprising twist.

Strong Words began 16 years ago in Los Angeles and has since grown into a long-running live storytelling series, with more than 100 shows featuring voices from a wide range of backgrounds. Harris says the goal is to present diverse perspectives that audiences can relate to, with stories that are thoughtful, engaging and often deeply personal.

The program has been part of the Coachella Valley arts scene for several years, appearing at venues including galleries, theaters and cultural spaces throughout the region. This marks the first time the show will be held at the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory.

While the event is suitable for teens and adults, organizers say the stories explore mature themes and real-life experiences — offering both humor and reflection.

Admission is free, and no ticket is required. Guests can simply arrive and enjoy an evening celebrating the art of storytelling.
