Trademark filing sparks questions about potential profit from proposed Trump airport renaming in Florida
A new trademark filing by the Trump Organization is drawing scrutiny as Florida lawmakers consider renaming Palm Beach International Airport after Donald Trump.
The proposal to rename the airport “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” recently passed the Florida House of Representatives. But some lawmakers say trademark applications connected to the name raise questions about whether the Trump family could financially benefit from the change.
Florida state Rep. Shevrin Jones said the trademark filing led him to reconsider his support for the proposal. He argued that no president — regardless of political party — should be able to profit from the naming of a public airport. An amendment he introduced to block potential financial gains did not pass.
A spokesperson for the Trump Organization said neither Trump nor his family would receive royalties, licensing fees, or any financial compensation from the renaming. The proposed legislation also specifies that the branding would come at no cost to the county.
Still, trademark filings submitted by the organization include multiple variations of the airport name, along with a wide range of goods and services — from merchandise like clothing and jewelry to airport services and retail operations. Trademark experts say such filings could allow the organization to control branding and potentially license the name for commercial use.
Supporters of the filing say trademarks can serve purposes beyond profit, including protecting a name from misuse and ensuring consistent branding standards.
The companion bill is expected to be considered by the Florida Senate before heading to Ron DeSantis. If approved, the renaming would make the Palm Beach airport one of several public facilities proposed to bear Trump’s name.
The debate highlights broader questions about branding, public infrastructure, and the financial implications of naming rights tied to political figures.
