Eric Dane, Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria Star, Dies at 53 After ALS Battle

Actor Eric Dane, widely known for his memorable roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53, according to his publicist. He passed away Thursday following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In a statement, his family shared that Dane spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and two daughters. They also highlighted his commitment to raising awareness and supporting research after publicly revealing his ALS diagnosis in 2025.

Dane built a long and successful career in television and film that began in the early 1990s. He appeared in popular series such as The Wonder Years and Roseanne before landing more prominent roles in the years that followed.

He became widely recognized for playing Dr. Mark Sloan, often referred to as “McSteamy,” on the hit ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. Dane joined the show in 2006 and remained a key figure through multiple seasons, later returning for a guest appearance in 2021.

Beyond television, Dane also appeared in several major films, including X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, and Burlesque.

More recently, he portrayed Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria, a complex and often intimidating character that became central to the series’ storyline. He was expected to appear in the show’s upcoming third and final season.

Dane is being remembered not only for his on-screen performances, but also for his advocacy and openness about living with ALS.
