Team USA Men’s Hockey Wins Overtime Thriller as Shiffrin Claims Gold at Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics
Team USA delivered a thrilling performance on the ice and across the slopes as competition continued at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
The U.S. men’s hockey team secured a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Sweden, moving one step closer to the gold medal game. Quinn Hughes scored the game-winning goal in extra time, sending the Americans into the semifinals where they will face Slovakia. The matchup was one of the most anticipated events of the Games, fueled by the return of NHL players to Olympic competition.
Canada also advanced in men’s hockey, defeating Czechia in overtime after Mitch Marner scored the decisive goal. Canada will now face Finland in the semifinals.
On the slopes, Mikaela Shiffrin delivered a dominant performance in the women’s slalom, capturing her first Olympic medal since 2018 and the third gold of her career. The victory marked a powerful comeback after several challenging Olympic races in recent years. Shiffrin described the moment as emotional, saying she felt especially grateful and proud.
Team USA also celebrated a milestone in cross-country skiing. Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher earned silver in the team sprint, marking another historic medal for the U.S. in an event where American success has been rare. Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo claimed gold, continuing his dominant Olympic run.
In snowboarding slopestyle, Jake Canter earned a bronze medal in his Olympic debut. The 22-year-old’s achievement is especially remarkable after surviving a traumatic head injury a decade ago.
Looking ahead, Olympic excitement continues with the highly anticipated women’s hockey gold medal game between the United States and Canada, while speedskater Jordan Stolz will compete for another medal in the men’s 1500 meters.
