Verona’s Ancient Arena to Host 2026 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony

The 2026 Winter Olympics are winding down, but not before Italy delivers a closing ceremony thousands of years in the making.

While Milan hosted the opening celebration, Verona is set to steal the global spotlight with the finale. The Closing Ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics will take place inside the breathtaking Arena di Verona — a structure that has stood for nearly 2,000 years.

Built in the first century AD, the Arena di Verona is even older than the Colosseum in Rome. Over the centuries, it has hosted gladiator battles, elaborate reenactments of Greek naval conflicts — complete with the arena flooded with water — and even performances by Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show.

Originally capable of seating up to 30,000 spectators, the amphitheater was partially damaged by an earthquake that destroyed much of its upper ring. Today, it seats around 10,000 people — who watch performances from the very same stone seats once occupied by ancient Romans.

Davide D’Acomo of the Arena di Verona Foundation says the venue’s emotional power is immediate and overwhelming. Its acoustics are world-renowned, making it home to the Arena di Verona Summer Concert Series and the largest opera stage in the world, hosting dozens of performances each summer.

Now, that grand stage is preparing for its biggest act yet: the Olympic Closing Ceremony. Within the arena’s 450-by-400-foot dimensions — designed centuries ago to provide perfect sightlines — thousands of spectators will gather to celebrate the culmination of the Games.

Organizers say the setting will create a unique connection between Italy’s ancient past and its modern cultural identity, offering athletes and viewers around the world a ceremony unlike any other.

As competition heads into its final days, the United States currently sits third in the medal count behind host nation Italy, while Norway continues its dominant showing at the Milan-Cortina Games.
