White House Ballroom Plan Advances After Fast-Track Approval of East Wing Renovation
Plans for a new ballroom at the White House moved a step closer to reality after the Commission of Fine Arts fast-tracked approval of the East Wing renovation design.
In an unusual move, the independent federal agency not only approved the concept but also signed off on the final design — significantly accelerating the typical review process for federal building projects. The commission advises the president and Congress on design matters involving monuments, memorials, and major government structures.
The vote came despite strong public opposition. According to the committee chair, more than 2,000 public comments were submitted, with the overwhelming majority expressing concerns about issues such as demolition, project scale, and transparency.
The virtual meeting was not open to in-person public comment, and the commission summarized written feedback during the session.
The approval followed the swearing-in of two new members shortly before the vote, making this the first meeting of a panel composed entirely of presidential appointees. One of the newly installed commissioners voiced strong support for the renovation, describing the White House as the “greatest house in the world” and backing the vision for a world-class ballroom.
Project architect Shalom Baranes presented detailed renderings and 3-D models of the redesigned East Wing — offering the public its most complete look yet at the proposed expansion.
The project still requires approval from the National Capital Planning Commission, which is scheduled to review the proposal at its next meeting on March 5.
