Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Demands $8.6 Billion Tariff Refund After Supreme Court Ruling

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is demanding more than $8 billion be returned to the state after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sweeping reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Trump were unconstitutional.
In a 6-3 decision, the court found the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, known as IEEPA, does not give the president authority to impose tariffs.
Following the ruling, businesses across the country began pressing the administration for refunds tied to the policy. Now, Illinois is taking that demand a step further.
Pritzker sent a letter to the president — along with an invoice marked “Past Due – Delinquent” — claiming Illinois families were financially harmed by the tariffs. The governor says each of the state’s more than 5.1 million households is owed $1,700, totaling more than $8.6 billion.
In his letter, Pritzker argued the tariffs increased costs for consumers and disrupted farmers and international relationships. He also warned the state could pursue further action if the federal government does not provide compensation.
The governor said Illinois families felt the impact in everyday expenses — from groceries to household goods — calling tariffs a form of taxation that working families ultimately paid.
The move marks the latest clash between Pritzker and the president, who have frequently disagreed on major policy issues, including immigration enforcement and federal intervention in Chicago.
It’s unclear whether any refunds will be issued or what legal steps could follow if the demand is not met.
