President Donald Trump Reacts to Supreme Court Tariffs Ruling, Calls Decision “Deeply Disappointing”

President Donald Trump is speaking out after the Supreme Court ruled that he exceeded his authority in using a 1977 law to impose sweeping tariffs.

During a news conference at the White House, the president called the ruling “deeply disappointing” and said he was “ashamed” of some of the justices involved in the decision. The Supreme Court determined that tariffs implemented under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were outside the president’s legal authority.

Despite the ruling, Trump said existing tariffs will remain in place and that his administration will pursue other legal options to continue imposing trade measures. He announced plans to use alternative statutory authorities, including maintaining national security tariffs under Section 232 and existing tariffs under Section 301.

The president also said he intends to sign an order imposing a 10 percent global tariff under Section 122, adding to existing tariffs already in effect.

Supporters of the ruling — including some Democrats and Republicans — say the decision protects consumers and reinforces the constitutional separation of powers. Meanwhile, some GOP lawmakers say they plan to work with the administration to restore or replace the tariffs through other legal avenues.

The legal and political battle over trade authority is expected to continue as policymakers weigh the economic and diplomatic impact of the ruling.
