Team Behind Team USA: Olympic Families Provide Powerful Support Beyond the Podium

As Team USA athletes compete for gold in Italy, another group is making its own sacrifices behind the scenes — their families.

While athletes take center stage at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, loved ones in the stands and around the rink are providing emotional support that can be just as meaningful as a medal. From cheering toddlers to creative spouses, the “team behind the team” plays a powerful role in the Olympic experience.

Italian speedskater Francesca Lollobrigida celebrated her gold with her young son Tomasso nearby, while freestyle skier Jaelin Kauf’s family proudly supported her silver medal performance. Bobsled champion Elana Meyers Taylor also had strong family backing, with her husband and son cheering during her gold medal ceremony.

One of the most recognizable supporters is Drew Schofield, the energetic two-year-old son of Team USA hockey star Kendall Coyne Schofield. Whether collecting a stray puck or chanting “Go USA,” Drew has become a fan favorite — even handing the puck to his mom, believing it belonged to her.

Support also comes in creative ways. Steph Klein, married to U.S. hockey center Alex Carpenter, has been sewing custom gear for players and families. The former equipment manager has created more than 20 pieces, many made from Carpenter’s old uniforms, turning memories into wearable support.

For Kendall Coyne Schofield, family involvement is part of her pregame routine — a fist bump, a wave, and a heartfelt goodbye to her son before stepping onto the ice.

These moments remind everyone watching that Olympic success is rarely achieved alone. Behind every performance is a network of encouragement, love, and dedication — proof that sometimes the greatest victories are shared far beyond the podium.
