Team USA Mixed Aerials Looks Ahead to Gold as Olympic Bonds Stay Strong

Team USA’s mixed aerials team stunned the world when it captured Olympic gold in Beijing. Four years later, the roster may look different, but the strong bonds between teammates remain a driving force as the team once again aims for the podium.

Aerial skiing is one of the most breathtaking events of the Winter Games, featuring athletes launching high into the air while performing complex flips and twists before landing on steep slopes. Precision, timing, and courage are essential — and so is trust.

Christopher Lillis, the lone returning member of the gold medal-winning Beijing squad, says success has continued even as the lineup has changed. The United States has captured multiple world championship titles since that Olympic victory, each with a different team combination. For Lillis, that consistency reflects the strength of the program as a whole.

Athletes spend years preparing for the extreme demands of aerial competition. Much of their early training takes place in water facilities, where skiers practice rotations and body positioning to build muscle memory before attempting the same skills on snow.

But what truly sets the team apart is its close personal connection. Lillis officiated the wedding of former teammates Justin Schoenfeld and Ashley Caldwell. He’s also longtime friends with fellow Olympian Winter Vinecki — relationships that help create confidence when competing at the highest level.

The sport continues to evolve with new talent emerging, including rising star Kaila Kuhn, one of the youngest aerials world champions in Team USA history.

No matter who makes up the final lineup, the shared trust and support among teammates remain constant — proving that in aerials, strong relationships can be just as important as big tricks.
