Secret Service to Provide Tailored Suits to New Protective Detail Agents

New Secret Service agents assigned to protective details may soon receive a wardrobe upgrade.

According to sources and a public contract solicitation, the Secret Service plans to provide two tailored suits to each agent who completes protective detail training. The suits will be navy blue, made in the United States, and include name embroidery inside the jacket.

Officials say the move is intended to address cost concerns for agents early in their careers. Unlike members of the uniformed division, who receive agency-issued clothing, plainclothes protective detail agents have traditionally been required to purchase their own suits.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security says the initiative is designed to correct that imbalance and support new agents entering the field. Some officials also believe covering the cost of suits could help recruitment by reducing the financial burden on those starting their careers.

However, the change has drawn some criticism. Former law enforcement officials say the policy is unusual and question the spending, citing ongoing resource challenges within the Secret Service.

The suits will only be issued to newly trained agents and must be funded within the agency’s existing budget.

The rollout may also be affected by a partial government shutdown involving the Department of Homeland Security. While negotiations continue, Secret Service personnel are considered essential and remain on duty, though it is unclear whether the new suit contract can proceed during the funding lapse.
