Topo Chico Mineral Water Shortage Hits U.S. as Production Pauses at Mexico Source

Topo Chico mineral water is becoming harder to find across the United States, and the shortage could last for months.

Coca-Cola, which owns the popular carbonated mineral water brand, says its flagship product sold in glass bottles is temporarily unavailable due to production issues tied to the water source and facilities in Mexico. The company says it is upgrading operations at the source while addressing challenges that have slowed production in recent months.

According to communications sent to distributors, the slowdown stems from problems with the wells in Monterrey, Mexico, where the water is sourced. Officials say they discovered additional challenges, including quality concerns related to the geology of the source, prompting the company to pause orders while improvements are made.

Coca-Cola says it is investing in upgrades to improve stability and long-term production capacity. The company expects Topo Chico mineral water to return later this year, with some projections indicating availability may not resume until the third quarter.

The shortage applies specifically to the classic mineral water product in glass bottles. Other Topo Chico beverages, including flavored sparkling waters and canned cocktails, remain available.

Topo Chico has become a key part of Coca-Cola’s growing water portfolio as more consumers move away from sugary sodas and toward sparkling and premium water options. The temporary production pause highlights the challenges companies face in maintaining supply from natural sources.
