Trump raises global tariffs to 15% following Supreme Court ruling on trade authority

President Donald Trump announced that global tariffs will increase to 15%, up from 10%, following a Supreme Court ruling that found his administration exceeded its authority when imposing certain trade duties.

The court’s 6-3 decision determined that tariffs issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were not legally justified, prompting a shift in strategy from the White House. In response, Trump said the higher tariff rate would take effect immediately and would be implemented under a different trade law — Section 122 — which allows temporary tariffs of up to 15%.

Those duties can remain in place for up to 150 days unless Congress approves an extension.

The administration has not confirmed whether the new 15% tariff will begin on the same timeline previously set for the 10% rate, which was scheduled to take effect early Tuesday.

Trump sharply criticized the Supreme Court decision, calling it disappointing and expressing frustration with justices who ruled against his trade policy. He has previously imposed sweeping tariffs on multiple countries, including significantly higher duties on key trading partners such as China, India, and Brazil.

Officials say additional tariffs could still be imposed through other trade authorities, including investigations related to national security, trade agreement violations, or discriminatory trade practices.

Trump is expected to address global trade policy further during his upcoming State of the Union address, where the future direction of U.S. tariff strategy may become clearer.
