The Department of Homeland Security has reversed its decision to suspend TSA PreCheck after briefly announcing the popular expedited airport screening program would be halted during the ongoing partial government shutdown.
Officials now say the Transportation Security Administration will continue operating TSA PreCheck but will evaluate services “case by case” depending on staffing levels.
Earlier Sunday, DHS said both TSA PreCheck and the Global Entry trusted-traveler program would be temporarily suspended, sparking confusion among travelers across the country. However, passengers were still using TSA PreCheck lanes at major airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport, even after the announcement.
The shutdown is currently affecting only DHS, after Congress failed to reach a funding agreement tied to disputes over immigration enforcement policy.
TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are widely used programs that allow expedited airport security screening and faster customs processing. Together, they serve tens of millions of vetted travelers. A suspension would have forced members to use standard screening lines, likely increasing wait times nationwide.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said the agency is making staffing and operational adjustments during the shutdown as essential workers continue reporting to duty without pay. That includes tens of thousands of TSA officers who remain on the job to maintain airport security.
The agency has suspended some nonessential services, including courtesy airport escorts for members of Congress, to focus resources on passenger screening.
While TSA PreCheck remains available for now, officials warn that airport wait times could still increase if staffing shortages worsen during the funding lapse.
