USA Men's Hockey wins first gold medal since 1980

It was the greatest hockey game we have seen in decades. Maybe ever. Certainly the fastest pace on the ice of all-time.

The United States defeated rival Canada 2-1 in overtime in the gold medal game.

It's only fitting it was 46 years to the day after the iconic 'Miracle On Ice' at the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid when the Americans upset the heavily favored Soviet Union.

From the opening faceoff, the rivalry was intense. Team USA struck first, with Matt Boldy capitalizing on a strong offensive opportunity to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead early in the game.

Canada answered late in the second period when Cale Makar fired a wrist shot past U.S. goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, knotting the score at 1-1 and setting the stage for a classic defensive battle. After a scoreless third period that saw plenty of back-and-forth action, the game was headed to overtime.

Just 1:41 into 3-on-3 overtime, Jack Hughes etched his name into Olympic lore. Receiving a pass from defenseman Zach Werenski, Hughes unleashed a blistering shot that slipped past Canada’s Jordan Binnington and secured the 2-1 victory for the Americans.

Hughes’ golden goal ignited celebrations both on the ice and back home, ending a 46-year gold medal drought for the U.S. men’s team — the longest gap between titles in the program’s history.

The celebration ended with a beautiful moment during the official team photo on the ice. Members of the Gaudreau family — including his children — were invited to join the squad with the jersey held in front of them.
