Cartel Leader's Death Sparks Violence in Mexico, Stranding Travelers
The Mexican army killed the leader of the country's most powerful drug cartel over the weekend, triggering hours of violence that left tourists trapped and forced airlines to cancel dozens of flights from California.
Nemesio Cervantes, who led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, died while being flown to Mexico City after being wounded during a military operation to capture him, according to Mexico's Defense Department. The White House confirmed the U.S. provided intelligence support for the operation.
The Jalisco cartel has been trafficking huge quantities of fentanyl and other drugs into the United States.
His death set off chaos throughout the state, with cartel members torching vehicles and setting up roadblocks. Puerto Vallarta—normally a tourist destination—became a scene of destruction, with fires burning throughout the city.
"It's really scary," said Megan Phelps, an American from Los Angeles who lives part-time in Puerto Vallarta. She counted 23 active fires from her high-rise condo. "They were setting fire to some of the gas stations. They set fire to multiple cars in front of the Costco. Pretty much the city is on lockdown."
The violence disrupted travel throughout California. At San Jose International Airport, flights to Guadalajara were canceled, along with an incoming flight from Puerto Vallarta. San Francisco International saw nine flights from Puerto Vallarta canceled on Sunday alone.
Both Air Canada and United Airlines temporarily canceled all flights to Puerto Vallarta. Delta says its flights to the region may be affected through at least Thursday.
Norma Hernandez drove from Tracy to San Jose International to cancel her trip after speaking with family in Guadalajara. "They said that everything is shut down," she said. "There was chaos, a building that was lit on fire, shots."
The State Department is now advising Americans in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara to shelter in place due to cartel violence.
