Apple Watch Alert Leads to Life-Saving Heart Procedure for North Texas Man
A North Texas man says a notification from his smartwatch may have saved his life after it alerted him to a dangerously low heart rate.
Brad Jackson of Plano had worn his Apple Watch for years to track daily walks and workouts. But last summer, the device delivered an unexpected warning — showing his pulse had dropped to just 32 beats per minute.
At first, Jackson thought the reading was a malfunction. When the alert appeared again, he still felt no symptoms and didn’t immediately take action. A heart rate that low is considered bradycardia, a condition that can become serious if left untreated.
Weeks later, his smartwatch data showed his resting heart rate dropping into the low 30s again — and staying there. This time, Jackson began to feel something wasn’t right. He noticed unusual sensations in his chest and felt unwell throughout the day.
That prompted him to contact his doctor.
Within days, doctors implanted a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat. Jackson says he now feels fully recovered and believes the early alert made all the difference.
Health experts say his experience reflects a growing shift in wearable technology, moving beyond fitness tracking into more advanced medical monitoring. Federal regulators have also expanded approvals for heart-screening features in wearable devices.
Doctors stress that smartwatches should never replace professional medical care. However, they can serve as an important early warning tool — helping people detect potential problems and seek treatment sooner.
Jackson says he is grateful he paid attention to the alert and acted quickly.
