Climate Action and Land Equity Project Expands Land Access for California Farmers

Across California, access to land remains one of the biggest challenges facing farmers and ranchers — especially those from historically underserved communities and the next generation of agricultural leaders.

The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) Climate Action and Land Equity Project, known as CALE, is working to change that.

The program focuses on expanding equitable access to land while providing climate-smart support to growers and land stewards. By building partnerships and connecting farmers with trusted technical assistance, CALE helps simplify ownership challenges and strengthen long-term land security.

For many families, land represents more than just a business — it’s a legacy. Farmers involved in the program say securing long-term access ensures they can pass their operations down to future generations.

Climate change and short-term leases have made it increasingly difficult for small and underserved farmers to maintain stability. CALE addresses those concerns by linking growers to programs that support regenerative and climate-resilient land management practices.

Some participating farmers are already implementing regenerative approaches, including eliminating herbicides, pesticides, and synthetic fertilizers to improve soil health and long-term sustainability.

Program leaders say the goal is to ensure California’s natural and working lands remain inclusive, resilient, and productive for decades to come.

Those interested in learning more about land access resources and climate-smart support can visit the UC ANR website or connect through the program’s online portal.

Together, organizers say, California can build an agricultural future rooted in equity, opportunity, and climate resilience.
