Fraud Seminar in Palm Springs Aims to Protect Residents From Rising Scams

Residents gathered at the Palm Springs Police Department for a fraud awareness seminar aimed at helping locals spot scams before becoming victims.

According to the department, officers handled 79 fraud-related cases in 2025 alone, resulting in an estimated loss of more than $1.3 million. With scams becoming more sophisticated, officials say community education is one of the most effective tools to prevent future crimes.

Police say many scams—whether online, over the phone, or in person—often target older adults. That’s why the department organized the seminar to walk attendees through real cases they’ve encountered and the tactics criminals frequently use.

Visitors and residents alike say scam calls have become increasingly common. Some attendees shared that they now receive suspicious calls regularly, making it difficult to tell what is legitimate and what is not.

During the seminar, Palm Springs police leaders explained the most common fraud schemes reported locally and how scammers pressure victims into acting quickly.

Officials also emphasized three key rules to help people avoid becoming victims: be cautious of anyone creating a sense of urgency, watch for red flags, and talk to a trusted friend or family member if something doesn’t feel right.

Police hope that by sharing real examples and practical advice, residents will feel more confident recognizing scams and protecting themselves and their finances.
