Trump Set to Deliver State of the Union Address Tonight Amid Low Approval Ratings
President Trump is preparing to deliver his State of the Union address this evening, where he's expected to talk about immigration, the economy and tariffs.
Supreme Court justices, lawmakers from both parties and other important figures are set to attend the speech, though some Democrats have already signaled plans to boycott the event by attending a nearby rally instead.
The president faces an uphill battle with public opinion. The latest Washington Post ABC poll shows 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump's overall performance, with more than half disapproving of key policies like the economy, international relations and immigration enforcement. Changing minds is expected to be a key focus of tonight's speech as Trump makes his own case.
Supreme Court justices are expected to be front and center following their 6-3 ruling last week that limited Trump's ability to level tariffs. Trump called the decision "deeply disappointing" and said he's "ashamed of certain members of the court."
The president's base and most Americans will want to hear plans for lowering inflation and prices. Trump claims he's already winning on that front.
Because of the president's address tonight, NBC Palm Springs will not have its regularly scheduled 6 pm broadcast or the Roggin Report tonight. There will instead be special live coverage with Tom Llamas. The station will be back for the 11 o'clock evening news.
