Wrong Way Driver Killed in Head-On Crash on I-10 Near Indio

A wrong-way driver died after colliding head-on with another vehicle on Interstate 10 eastbound near Dillon Road early Tuesday morning, investigators say.

The crash happened around 4:42 a.m. when a Nissan Sentra traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes struck a Toyota Camry head-on in the number one lane, according to the California Highway Patrol. Both vehicles were driven by single male drivers.

The driver of the Nissan Sentra was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say they suspect the driver was impaired at the time of the crash, though the Riverside County Coroner's Office has not yet released the driver's identity.

The Toyota Camry driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital.

The crash initially closed eastbound lanes and diverted traffic off at Dillon Road near Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. As of mid-morning Tuesday, roadways are open, and traffic is flowing through the area again.

The CHP is asking anyone with information about the crash to call Officer V. Bounlangsy at (760) 772-5300.
