Team USA Captain Hilary Knight Criticizes White House Invite After Olympic Gold Win
Team USA women’s hockey captain Hilary Knight is speaking out after President Donald Trump’s invitation to the White House sparked controversy in the wake of a historic Olympic performance.
During an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, Knight described the invitation as a “distasteful joke,” saying the political attention has overshadowed what should be a celebratory moment for both the men’s and women’s teams.
The controversy began after Trump phoned the men’s team following their 2-1 overtime gold medal win over Canada. During the call — broadcast in the locker room on speakerphone held by FBI Director Kash Patel — Trump said the women’s team would also need an invitation, joking that he would “probably be impeached” if they weren’t. Laughter from several players in the room drew backlash once the video circulated online.
The women’s team had already secured its third Olympic gold medal with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory against Canada at the Milan Cortina Winter Games. Knight scored the late game-tying goal and became the all-time Olympic leader in goals and points for U.S. women’s hockey.
In her interview, Knight said the moment should have focused on the success of women in sport, rather than political commentary. She acknowledged that the men’s players were in a difficult position and described the laughter as a “quick lapse” in judgment.
Boston Bruins and Team USA goaltender Jeremy Swayman also addressed the incident, saying the team should have responded differently and expressing pride in sharing the gold medal achievement with the women’s squad.
Despite the friction, Knight emphasized unity between the teams and called the situation a learning moment about how women’s achievements are discussed and celebrated.
