Block Cuts Nearly Half Its Workforce as CEO Says AI Will Reshape Most Companies

Block, the financial technology company behind Square, Cash App and Afterpay, is cutting roughly 40% of its workforce as it restructures around artificial intelligence.

The move will eliminate more than 4,000 jobs, shrinking the company’s staff to just under 6,000 employees. Co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey said the decision reflects the growing power of AI tools that allow smaller teams to do more work faster and more efficiently.

In a letter to shareholders, Dorsey described AI as rapidly compounding in capability, making it possible for leaner teams to outperform larger ones. He predicted most companies will soon follow a similar path, restructuring operations to rely more heavily on automation and advanced digital tools.

Company leaders emphasized the layoffs are not tied to financial struggles. Dorsey said Block’s business remains strong, with continued growth in gross profit. Instead, executives say the cuts are a strategic shift to move faster with highly skilled teams supported by artificial intelligence.

Chief Financial Officer Amrita Ahuja said the company sees an opportunity to accelerate performance by automating more work and reducing organizational size.

The announcement reflects a broader trend across the tech industry, where companies are restructuring as AI reshapes job functions and productivity expectations. Major firms including Amazon, Meta and Microsoft have also reduced staffing while expanding investment in artificial intelligence.

Block says affected employees will receive severance packages, extended health coverage, continued equity vesting through late spring and additional financial support.

Investors responded positively to the announcement, with Block’s stock jumping sharply after the news. The reaction suggests growing confidence among investors that companies embracing AI-driven efficiency may gain a competitive advantage.

As artificial intelligence continues to transform how businesses operate, the scale of Block’s layoffs signals how dramatically workforce structures may evolve in the coming years.
