Doctors Say Start Preparing Now for Spring Allergies Before Symptoms Begin

The official start of spring is still weeks away, but health experts say people who suffer from Seasonal Allergies should begin preparing now to reduce symptoms before pollen levels rise.

Roughly one in four adults and nearly one in five children in the United States experience seasonal allergies. Doctors say early preparation can make a significant difference once trees and plants begin releasing pollen.

Dr. Rohit Katyal of National Jewish Health says allergy sufferers should begin treatment before symptoms appear so the body’s reaction is less severe. In most parts of the country, tree pollen is the first major trigger of the season, meaning people with tree allergies often experience symptoms early in spring.

To prevent severe reactions, experts recommend starting steroid nasal sprays in advance. These medications help reduce inflammation, swelling, and mucus in the nasal passages. Doctors say they should be used daily — not just when symptoms flare — and continued throughout allergy season.

Daily oral antihistamines may also help. People whose symptoms typically begin early can start taking them ahead of time. Those with later triggers, such as grass pollen, may want to begin treatment closer to late April.

For individuals with significant eye irritation, allergy eye drops can also provide relief, especially for persistent itching and discomfort.

Health experts say taking preventive steps now can help allergy sufferers breathe easier when spring pollen levels peak.
