Mamdani also said he raised concerns about a Columbia University student detained earlier in the day by federal immigration agents. He later reported that Trump informed him the student would be released, and the student subsequently confirmed her release on social media.

The meeting comes just days after Trump mentioned Mamdani during his State of the Union address, referring to him as a “nice guy.” The two leaders have previously discussed a range of urban policy issues, including real estate development, zoning regulations, and infrastructure costs.
