Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Meet at White House to Discuss Housing
President Donald Trump met with Zohran Mamdani, mayor of New York City, at the White House on Thursday for discussions focused primarily on housing and urban development.
Following the meeting, Mamdani described the conversation as productive and said he looks forward to working on efforts to expand housing in New York City. The visit was not publicly announced ahead of time, but officials familiar with the plans said housing was expected to be a central topic — continuing discussions from a previous White House meeting in November.
Mamdani also said he raised concerns about a Columbia University student detained earlier in the day by federal immigration agents. He later reported that Trump informed him the student would be released, and the student subsequently confirmed her release on social media.
The meeting comes just days after Trump mentioned Mamdani during his State of the Union address, referring to him as a “nice guy.” The two leaders have previously discussed a range of urban policy issues, including real estate development, zoning regulations, and infrastructure costs.
Their latest meeting reflects ongoing coordination between federal and city leaders as New York continues addressing housing demand and other major policy challenges.
