Legendary Singer-Songwriter Neil Sedaka Dies at 86

The world of popular music has lost a giant.

Legendary singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka has died at the age of 86, according to a statement from his family released to People magazine.

The Brooklyn native showed musical talent at an early age, studying piano and becoming part of Juilliard’s Children’s Preparatory Program. His early foundation in classical training helped shape a career that would span decades.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Sedaka became a household name with a string of chart-topping hits, including “Oh! Carol,” “Calendar Girl,” and “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen.” His catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics helped define an era of American pop music.

Over the course of his career, Sedaka released more than two dozen studio albums and continued performing for audiences around the world. In 1983, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential pop songwriters of his generation.

Neil Sedaka’s music remains a lasting part of the soundtrack of American life.
