Austin mass shooting leaves 2 dead, 14 injured as investigators examine possible Iran conflict link

Law enforcement officials are investigating whether escalating tensions involving Iran may have influenced the suspect in a deadly mass shooting early Sunday in Austin’s entertainment district. Authorities caution that it is still too early to determine a definitive motive.

The shooting left two people dead and 14 others injured. Three victims remain in critical condition. Officials say the suspected gunman, a 53-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, was killed by police after opening fire in a busy downtown area.

Investigators say the suspect wore a shirt with an Iranian flag design, and evidence at the scene prompted federal authorities to examine whether there may be a terrorism-related connection. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting with the investigation while officials review the suspect’s electronic devices, writings, and background.

According to Austin police, the gunman initially fired from inside a large SUV near a crowded bar patio before driving a short distance, exiting the vehicle with a rifle, and continuing to shoot at pedestrians. Officers confronted and fatally shot the suspect within about a minute of being alerted, aided by the routine weekend deployment of police and emergency crews downtown.

Authorities also searched the suspect’s home and are reviewing past mental health encounters. A bomb squad inspected the suspect’s vehicle but found no explosives.

City leaders praised the rapid response by first responders, noting that emergency medical teams treated and transported all victims within minutes.

The incident marks one of at least 56 mass shootings reported nationwide so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
