Federal Prosecutors Drop Death Penalty in Luigi Mangione Case as Trials Move Forward
Federal prosecutors will not appeal a judge’s decision removing the death penalty as a possible punishment in the Luigi Mangione case, clearing the way for his federal trial to move forward.
Mangione is accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. A recent court ruling eliminated capital punishment as an option in the federal case, and prosecutors have now confirmed they will not challenge that decision.
With the issue resolved, jury selection in Mangione’s federal trial is expected to begin in September.
His state case is scheduled to proceed sooner, with trial set to begin in June. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to both the state and federal charges against him.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile victim and the dual prosecution at both the state and federal levels.
