Apple Launches Lower-Priced iPhone 17e to Boost Sales and Expand AI Adoption

Apple has introduced a lower-priced version of its flagship smartphone lineup, unveiling the new iPhone 17e as part of a strategy to boost sales and expand access to its artificial intelligence features.

The iPhone 17e starts at $599, making it $200 less than the standard iPhone 17. While more affordable, it still includes the same processor as the higher-end model. However, the device features a slightly smaller screen, a single rear camera instead of two, and does not include Apple’s Dynamic Island display feature. The phone launches March 11.

Apple has historically updated its lower-cost phones less frequently than its premium models, but recent releases suggest a shift in strategy. The company introduced the iPhone 16e last year, signaling stronger demand for budget-friendly devices following a more muted response to other recent iPhone models.

Strong iPhone sales have also helped ease investor concerns about Apple’s position in the artificial intelligence race. The company recently reported record upgrade rates and significant growth among customers switching from Android devices.

The iPhone 17e may help accelerate adoption of Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI platform, especially among users with older phones that cannot support the latest features.

The launch comes as the broader smartphone industry faces challenges, including an ongoing memory chip shortage linked to growing AI demand. Analysts expect global smartphone shipments to decline in the first quarter of the year.

Apple is expected to roll out additional major products in the coming months, including a redesigned Siri powered by advanced AI technology and possibly its first foldable iPhone.

The iPhone 17e will be available in black, white, and pink, with increased storage and a faster cellular modem compared to its predecessor. Apple also announced a new version of the iPad Air alongside the phone’s debut.
