Founding Documents Take Flight on “Freedom Plane” for Nationwide Tour
For the first time in United States history, several of the nation’s founding documents are traveling outside Washington, DC by air as part of a nationwide celebration tour.
The initiative, known as the Freedom Plane tour, launched from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and will visit eight cities through August. Officials say the effort is designed to bring America’s history directly to communities that may not have the opportunity to view the documents in person at the National Archives.
Among the historic items on display are an original engraving of the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution, and Oaths of Allegiance signed by figures including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr.
The documents are traveling aboard a Boeing 737-7BC aircraft in partnership with the National Archives. Officials emphasized that security and preservation measures remain a top priority throughout the tour.
The tour is described as a modern homage to the 1976 Freedom Train, which transported historic documents across the country during the bicentennial celebration.
Stops include Kansas City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, Denver, Miami, Dearborn and Seattle, where the documents will be displayed at museums and cultural institutions for limited dates.
Organizers say the tour offers a rare opportunity for Americans to see original founding documents up close without traveling to the nation’s capital.
