Man Fatally Shot by Virginia Trooper After Deadly Road Rage Stabbing on I-495 Near Washington, DC
A violent road rage incident on Interstate 495 near Washington, DC ended with multiple stabbings, one fatality, and the suspect shot and killed by a Virginia state trooper, authorities said.
Virginia State Police say the incident unfolded Sunday afternoon on the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County following a reported crash. A trooper was dispatched around 1:17 p.m. and encountered a man armed with a knife at the scene.
Police say the trooper shot the suspect in self-defense. The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Authorities say four people were stabbed during the attack. A 39-year-old woman died from her injuries, and a dog was also fatally stabbed. The conditions of the other victims have not been released.
Investigators believe the violence began after a crash along southbound I-495. The roadway remained partially closed for hours as police processed the scene, causing major traffic delays.
Witnesses described a chaotic and frightening situation. One driver reported seeing damaged vehicles, injured people covered in blood, and a man swinging a knife. Another witness said a woman appeared to be trying to stop the attacker before a trooper arrived and fired multiple shots.
Officials say the incident is being investigated and is not believed to be related to terrorism.
