Americans Stranded in Middle East as War Escalates Seek Help Returning Home

Americans stranded across the Middle East are expressing growing frustration and fear as the conflict in the region escalates and travel options remain limited.

Many travelers say they feel stuck without clear guidance as airspace closures and thousands of canceled flights make it difficult to leave the region. One American told CNN they feel “like a sitting duck” while waiting for options to return home.

The U.S. government says it is working to assist citizens who want to depart. Officials are exploring several options, including charter flights, expanded commercial flights, and possible military aircraft. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said more than 1,500 Americans have already contacted the State Department seeking assistance.

The State Department says it is helping arrange charter flights from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, while also assisting travelers in booking commercial flights from countries including Oman and Egypt. For Americans in areas where commercial aviation is unavailable, officials say they are working to move travelers to neighboring countries where flights are available.

U.S. embassies are also helping citizens travel over land when possible, including providing charter bus transportation to reach functioning airports.

Still, many Americans say the guidance they have received has been confusing. Some report being told to shelter in place while also being advised to depart immediately if flights are available — despite limited travel options.

The situation comes as the State Department reduces its diplomatic presence across parts of the region due to security concerns, ordering non-essential personnel and family members to leave several countries.

Officials say they remain confident they will be able to assist Americans seeking to return home as security conditions allow.
