Kristi Noem Faces Heated Questions During Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faced intense questioning from senators during a lengthy Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, with lawmakers pressing her on a wide range of issues including law enforcement actions, immigration policies, agency spending, and election security.

One of the most contentious topics involved the deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis following encounters with federal officers. Senators questioned Noem about earlier statements she made describing one of the individuals, Alex Pretti, in connection with domestic terrorism.

Noem defended her comments, saying she did not label Pretti himself a domestic terrorist but instead described the incident as appearing to be an act of domestic terrorism. When asked to apologize to the family, she expressed condolences but declined to retract her earlier statements.

Lawmakers also raised concerns about a Department of Homeland Security advertising campaign reportedly costing more than $220 million. Some senators questioned the process used to award contracts and criticized advertisements that prominently featured the secretary.

The hearing also included tense exchanges over immigration enforcement. Noem said there are currently no plans to deploy immigration officers to polling places during the upcoming midterm elections, though she stopped short of ruling out the possibility entirely.

Another topic involved DHS aircraft spending, including questions about the use of a $70 million executive jet that reportedly includes luxury accommodations. Noem said the aircraft is being modified and would be used for deportation operations and official travel, arguing the investment could save taxpayer money over time.

The hearing highlighted sharp political divisions and drew criticism from both sides of the aisle as lawmakers scrutinized the department’s actions and policies.
