Shaquille O’Neal Cheers on Son Shaqir as Sacramento State Wins Senior Night Game
Sacramento State’s senior night came with extra star power as basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal attended to support his son, Shaqir O’Neal, during the Hornets’ final home game of the season at Hornet Pavilion.
The Hornets entered the matchup against Idaho State looking to snap a seven-game losing streak — and delivered one of their strongest performances of the year. Sacramento State built a 17-point halftime lead and never looked back, defeating the Bengals 83-65.
Shaqir O’Neal scored seven points in front of family and fans. Senior Prophet Johnson led the way with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Mark Lavrenov of Rocklin added 19 points.
The victory secured Sacramento State the No. 8 seed in the Big Sky Tournament, where they will face Idaho on Saturday.
After the game, Shaqir said he told teammates he wanted a blowout win for his senior night — and they delivered.
When asked about his father’s presence and global fame, Shaqir said he has always viewed him simply as “dad,” adding that he continues to learn just how well-known Shaquille O’Neal is.
It was a memorable night on and off the court, as Sacramento State closed out its home schedule with momentum heading into tournament play.
