House Republicans Question Tim Walz and Keith Ellison Over Minnesota Welfare Fraud Scandal
Minnesota’s ongoing welfare fraud scandal returned to the national stage Wednesday as House Republicans questioned Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison during a tense hearing before the House Oversight Committee.
Lawmakers pressed the two leaders over what they knew about alleged fraud involving state safety net programs and whether their administrations acted quickly enough to stop it. Republicans argued that billions of taxpayer dollars may have flowed to fraudulent actors over several years, while Walz and Ellison strongly denied wrongdoing.
The hearing comes months after the issue intensified into a national political flashpoint. Allegations center on fraudulent claims tied to social service programs, including childcare funding and pandemic-era meal programs. Federal prosecutors have already brought charges against dozens of individuals connected to the Feeding Our Future nonprofit, which investigators say falsely claimed to provide meals to children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Republican members of the committee accused Minnesota leaders of failing to intervene earlier, with some lawmakers citing testimony from state officials who claimed whistleblowers were ignored or faced retaliation.
Walz pushed back on those claims during the hearing, saying whistleblowers have strong protections in Minnesota and accusing federal officials of targeting the state politically.
The controversy has also triggered broader political and legal battles. The Trump administration recently announced it would withhold more than $250 million in Medicaid funding from Minnesota, citing concerns about fraud. State officials have responded by filing a lawsuit, calling the move unlawful.
Attorney General Ellison emphasized that tackling fraud should be a bipartisan effort, saying both parties must work together to ensure taxpayer dollars are protected while still supporting the people the programs are designed to help.
The investigation into Minnesota’s welfare programs remains ongoing as federal and state officials continue to examine the scope of the alleged fraud.
