Talking with Thalia: Brewing Up Support for First Tee Coachella Valley

There’s something special about conversations over coffee — and this one came with a meaningful mission.

For this Coffee Talk edition of Talking with Thalia, we stopped by Cheers Coffee at The River, where community and caffeine blend perfectly. What started as a surprise visit turned into a heartfelt discussion about mentorship, opportunity, and giving back.

John Proctor of First Tee - Coachella Valley shared how the organization is transforming young lives across the desert. Founded in 1995, First Tee has grown into an international program that now reaches thousands of children through school partnerships and dedicated golf facilities.

Locally, First Tee Coachella Valley serves youth ages 4 to 17 — starting with their youngest participants, affectionately called “Little Linksters.” From that very first swing, Proctor says, you can see something ignite.

“It’s such a joy to watch them grow,” he explained, describing the confidence and life skills that blossom alongside their golf games.

The organization operates a golf course and driving range on Cook Street near Desert High School, providing not just athletic instruction, but mentorship and character development. Through its scholarship program, nine local students have already graduated or are currently attending college — proof that the impact goes far beyond the green.

While no local participants have turned pro just yet, other First Tee chapters have proudly produced PGA and LPGA professionals. And here in the Coachella Valley, the dream is very much alive.

This visit also highlighted the power of community partnerships. Cheers Coffee’s owner stepped up with a donation to First Tee’s virtual auction, part of ongoing fundraising efforts to expand the program’s reach.

Because sometimes, real change starts with something as simple as a cup of coffee — and a conversation.
