Trump and Major Tech Companies Sign Pledge Aimed at Preventing AI Data Centers from Raising Electricity Costs
The White House announced a new voluntary agreement with several major technology companies aimed at preventing artificial intelligence data centers from driving up electricity costs for consumers.
During a roundtable at the White House, President Donald Trump joined leaders from several large tech firms to unveil what the administration called a “ratepayer protection pledge.” The agreement is designed to address growing concerns that the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure could increase electricity demand and raise power bills.
Seven companies signed the pledge, including Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI and Amazon.
Under the agreement, the companies committed to building or purchasing the large amounts of electricity needed to power their expanding data centers. They also agreed to invest in the infrastructure needed to connect that power to the electric grid.
The companies further pledged to pay electricity rates that differ from those charged to typical residential consumers.
Artificial intelligence systems rely on large data centers that consume enormous amounts of electricity. In some regions of the United States, the growth of these facilities has strained local power supplies and contributed to rising utility prices.
States in the Mid-Atlantic region, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, have already experienced electricity price spikes tied in part to the concentration of data centers.
However, some energy experts say the new agreement has limited authority because it is voluntary and lacks enforcement power.
Officials in the administration acknowledged that the responsibility for enforcing electricity rate structures ultimately falls to state governments and utility regulators.
Still, analysts say the announcement highlights growing concern among policymakers and technology companies about the impact that rapidly expanding AI infrastructure could have on electricity costs.
