Rep. Warren Davidson Breaks with Trump, Backs War Powers Resolution on Iran
Republican Congressman Warren Davidson of Ohio broke with most members of his party this week, voting in favor of a measure aimed at limiting presidential war powers tied to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Davidson, a West Point graduate and Army veteran, was one of just two Republicans to join Democrats in supporting a war powers resolution that would require the White House to seek congressional approval before continuing military action against Iran.
The resolution ultimately failed after Republicans blocked the effort.
Davidson said his decision was driven by concerns about Congress maintaining its constitutional role in authorizing military force.
Speaking on the House floor, Davidson said, “I love this country with a soldier’s passion,” adding that allowing military action without congressional approval could pose a serious constitutional concern.
The Ohio lawmaker said his vote was also meant to signal to voters who oppose extended military conflicts that some Republican lawmakers share their concerns.
The legislation was co-led by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna of California.
Although only two Republicans voted in favor of the resolution, Davidson said many colleagues privately expressed similar concerns about the direction of the conflict.
Davidson noted that if military operations continue for 60 days without congressional authorization, it could raise significant constitutional questions.
Despite pressure from House Republican leadership and the administration, Davidson said he believed it was important for Congress to maintain its role in decisions related to war.
