Betty Ford Center Honors Legacy of Former First Lady During Women’s History Month
Staff at the Betty Ford Center are honoring the legacy of Betty Ford during Women's History Month, recognizing her role in transforming addiction treatment across the country.
The former first lady broke barriers in the late 1970s when she publicly shared her struggle with alcoholism and prescription drug dependence, an admission that helped reduce stigma and inspire others to seek help.
Leaders at the center say Ford’s openness helped spark a national conversation about substance use disorder, particularly among women who often faced greater stigma when seeking treatment.
More than four decades later, the recovery facility in Rancho Mirage has grown into an internationally recognized leader in addiction care, now operating as part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.
Staff members say Ford’s spirit and mission continue to guide their work today as they expand services and support people on the path to recovery.
