Desert in a Minute: The Story Behind Palm Springs’ Iconic Neighborhood Blade Signs
As NBC Palm Springs resident historian, Steve currently produces the “Desert in a Minute” segments, sharing stories that highlight the rich history and culture of the Coachella Valley.
One of the most recognizable features throughout Palm Springs neighborhoods is the city’s distinctive Blade Signs.
The Palm Springs Blade Sign program was created to foster a sense of neighborhood pride and belonging across the city. Each sign marks a specific neighborhood and reflects the history and identity of that community.
Since 2008, the program has been overseen by 1PS, also known as the Organized Neighborhoods of Palm Springs.
What makes the signs especially unique is that they are designed by the residents themselves. Each Blade Sign is custom made to represent the distinctive character of the neighborhood it welcomes visitors into.
For example, the El Mirador neighborhood sign features the historic El Mirador Tower, one of Palm Springs’ most recognizable landmarks.
The Andreas Hills sign highlights the dramatic desert landscape that surrounds the area, while several other neighborhoods incorporate images inspired by the valley’s famous sunrises.
Many Blade Signs also celebrate elements that define the desert lifestyle — including palm trees, windmills, and even the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.
Palm Springs’ ranching history is also represented. Neighborhoods such as Los Compadres, Milady Ranch, and Rogers Ranch honor the area’s cowboy heritage, while another sign pays tribute to legendary entertainer and Palm Springs resident Gene Autry.
Together, the Blade Signs serve as colorful landmarks that tell the story of Palm Springs neighborhoods — and the people who helped shape them.
